The surprise in the NFL this year has to be the Kansas City Chiefs who, after their 17-16 win over Houston Sunday, remain as the league’s only undefeated team. The Chiefs unexpectedly sit atop the AFC west at 7-0 even above a high powered Denver Broncos offense. And Kansas City isn’t doing anything crazy to reach this level of success; they’re just playing solid football. Their star running back Jamaal Charles has had over 100 yards from scrimmage (rushing + receiving) and at least one touchdown in each game this season. The Chiefs defense allows under 12 points a game and has sacked opposing quarterbacks an eye-popping 35 times. The defensive unit is anchored by playmakers at all levels like Outside Linebackers/Rush Ends Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, Inside Linebacker Derrick Johnson, and Safety Eric Berry. And they seem to have found their quarterback with Alex Smith, who efficiently manages the game and doesn’t turn the ball over. All of this comes with the winning mentality of their new head coach, Andy Reid, who has helped the Chiefs bounce back in a big way from a 2-14 campaign last season. If Kansas City can keep up their stellar play throughout the rest of the season, they will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the postseason. They also have a chance to send even more players than the 6 they had last year to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii to wear those snazzy new uniforms.
